This book is designed for use with high school-age learners and adults who are both non-science types and who desire a basic introduction to ecology. It is easy to read and easy to understand. Initially, it was written to act as the text for a foundations course to accompany instruction in environmental education, especially with respect to issue investigation and evaluation.
Sometimes humorous and sometimes serious, the book provides a solid foundation into key conceptual areas of ecology such as the biome, the ecosystem, population dynamics, succession, energy production and transfer, and the role of humans in ecological set tings. A number of activities which have been proven successful over the years have also been incorporated into the book.
Earlier versions of the book have been piloted in a number of classrooms and workshops for adult learners over the past ten years. The enthusiasm shown for the introduction to ecology prompted this publication by Stipes Publishing Company.
