Investigating and Evaluating Environmental Issues of the Rio Grande /
Rio Bravo River Valley

2001, Stipes Publishing L.L.C.

Trudi Volk, William Bluhm, Harold Hungerford, and John Ramsey

This case study focuses on the problems and issues associated with the Rio Grande / Rio Bravo River and the land through which it flows.  The five chapters in the case study begin by introducing the student to the river itself as well as its problems and issues.  Then, skill development begins in which the students proceed through and develop the abilities to analyze issues, conduct issue investigations, and develop action plans designed to resolve the investigated issues.

Among the issue topics to which the learner are introduced are water quality, water quantity, exotic species introduction, habitat destruction, endangered species, and air quality.  After selecting a local river-related issue, the students conduct an investigation of that issue and subsequently propose an action plan aimed at remediating the issue.

This case study has been developed in cooperation with International Project WET as a part of Discover a Watershed:  Rio Grande / Rio Bravo River Project.

Student and teacher editions available.  Grades 5 - 9.
